Learn tips for selling old books

Updated 27th July 2021

Do you ever wonder if this is possible to do, or do you just dismiss the thought as a bad idea? Well, I really would like to tell you that the answer is yes, and there are a few different ways you can do it. Find out what they are below.

Selling Old Books Online

There are many ways you can make money from books. If you have any old books then you can sell them online using sites like WeBuyBooks.co.uk or even Amazon.

Learn tips for selling old booksYou also have the opportunity to go to charity shops where books can be bought very cheaply and then sold for more online.

Sites such as WeBuyBooks.co.uk request you to send them the book’s barcode number where they then give you an offer for the book right away. This is better than having to wait to see if the book sells.

Once you send the book to them, you get your payment. You can do more than one book at time in the same sale. There are rules that you have to follow, and you can find them on their site.

A similar way to sell books, is through BookScouter.com who have the same idea as WeBuyBooks.co.uk. The difference with this, is instead of giving you an offer right away they tell you which is the best company willing to buy it back for the best price.

This is a very good tool as you can use it to make sure there is someone who is willing to pay you more for the book than someone is offering on e-bay.

Make Money From Self Publishing

Self publishing books on Kindle is another good way you can make money from books, you can also do this on Apple Store or even the Nook. However, as Amazon were the first to offer self publishing it has the most domination and makes Kindle publishing the best on offer.

With Kindle publishing you can write your own book with no need to have a deal or the things that go along with it like having to pitch your idea, deal with publishing companies or having to wait for responses. You can literally become an author within hours.

Guide to Kindle Publishing

Publishing books on Amazon Kindles are not difficult as you can start with as little as a cover and the content. Once your book is written you only have to upload it to Amazon servers to be reviewed. They use a specific file type named mobi but you can also upload a simple Word document.

Kindle publishing has attracted so many budding writers as they have made everything so simple.

 Making Money From Audio Books

Can you make money from books - Writers guide to audiobooksYou can make money from books, simply by selling audio books as they have a high demand due to their popularity. You have to record your own but if you are not up to recording your own book you can always look in to getting a voice-over to do it for you.

Audio book lovers prefer listening to someone who has a good tone. emotion and expression rather than having a monotonous voice which sounds boring and flat. As the 3rd biggest chunk of income for a writer comes from audio books getting a sale doesn’t mean you should sell the rights.

Although there is less audio books than physical or ebooks, the market is growing fast and there is a steady and persistent curve for audio books.

Conclusion

I hope that I have answered the question of “Can you make money from books online?” for you here with this post and you will think of trying out some of the ideas listed above.

I think that the idea of selling your old books on after you have finished with them is a very good idea and a great way to get yourself some extra money.

I enjoyed this site as I have difficulty still with reading on-line, as I often will print the pages and read as though reading an old book. Also, at a time when I could have used the extra money, I ended up donating a rather large collection of medical texts and that was a loss emotionally as well as from a monetary standpoint. I couldn’t bear to sell an antique Shakespeare book given the return was so poor for such a wonderfully complete collection.
I read a bit about you and understand that where you live, the weather is unpredictable. Given the size difference of the countries, there is an expression in many parts of North America, “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes”…Your country looks beautiful, the people very happy, as your family is described and I hope to visit one day!

Wow, I’m a lover of books coz I’m a bookworm. I have a lot of books no one reads anymore. Thought of selling it in Amazon but after seeing your post, I changed my mind. Just a little twist with my plan. I might just record an audio book and sell the book with it. Do you think this will work?

Thanks for this article, another idea giver.

    • Chez says:

Thank you very much for your comment Eli. I have to say that funnily enough I have a lot of books also that I won’t read anymore and was going to hand them into a charity shop. Then I came across this post again as it was so long ago and I had forgotten about it. When I read it again, I thought differently about what I was going to do with my books. I have more to add to it as well now.

Glad to see that I gave you some good ideas for what to do with your books and you can make some money off them at the same time.

A few months ago I found a big pile of books on someone’s driveway and they gave it all away for free. I definitely believed that there is a market for these books and that I could sell them to make money. I checked out bookscouter and entered a few barcodes of my books, but they offered no results. So maybe I had the wrong type of books…

But as far as writing your own books or audio books and selling them on Amazon Kindles, you must be already a famous writer or else nobody would find and buy your books. But I would like to become a published writer one day and make a full time income doing it, any advice on how to get started doing that?

    • Chez says:

Hi again Kent, I want to ask that did you take any or all of the books. I know I certainly would have had a look to see what was available and if I fancied any.

There certainly is a market for selling books, maybe you should try WeBuyBooks and see if you have any better luck there.

I would honestly love to say that I am good enough to write my own books but unfortunately I’m not. There are people within Wealthy Affiliate that have already written and published their own books so they would be able to tell you how you go about it all.

Making money online through books is such a great idea! Especially as a college student. I used to sell a lot of books while I was in college – all my used books and my friends’ haha. It is so easy and so effective. Audio books in a new one for me. I didn’t know you could make money out of that, but it makes sense. I think as we go more and more into using audio books, the business of it will grow and more opportunities will come to make money through them. Thanks for sharing!

    • Chez says:

Hi Parmi, I totally agree that being able to make money out of books is an excellent idea. You were quite right selling you and your friends books while in college, especially if you didn’t really need them any more.

I am not really a lover of Audio books so I never bother about them. However, for people who like them, this is certainly a very good idea and it is definitely becoming more and more popular.

You are very welcome thank you.

    Hello there,

Infact, I did wonder is it possible to make money from books (especially old ones), so going into this article I was very much looking forward to see if it’s indeed possible and how it can be achieved? I do have a lot of old books that I don’t need and would much rather get rid of because they take a lot of unnecessary desk space. After reading Yoru article,  I became quite interested in WeBuyBooks and I will definitely check them out, thanks for info! I also see myself trying out some fun stuff with audio books. All in all, thanks for the great knowledge and informative as well as interesting article, keep up the good work!

I am currently looking for ways to make money since I am planning to leave my day job in January as I am completely fed up with it. I have started an affiliate blog which unfortunately, is not ready to make money yet and will probably take me a while. I am looking at writing to make that extra buck that will make the difference between living as I do now and poverty. I have been looking at job boards, cold pitching, tweeter posts, you name it but it all seems like far fetched ideas that will take time to materialize. I am not afraid to put in time to writing but I don’t want to have to wait ages for results to appear. Although I had heard of Kindle, I didn’t know how it worked and that I could actually write and publish there. I hadn’t even thought about audio books which really sound good also. Anyway, you opened my eyes to new ideas and I am very thankful for it. Keep up the great work!!

If you are a writer, then using the Kindle idea to write and publish your own books is a very good idea. Do not forget though that you can also sell your old books if you no longer need them.

I want to take this opportunity here to wish you good luck in whatever direction you take and would love you to let me know how things go for you in the future.
